Being Good Neighbours

This is what God asks of you, only this, that you act justly, that you love tenderly, that you walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8

The Downtown Eastside parishes and Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Native Centre have embarked on an exciting parish renewal process. This process is aimed at building an active and engaged Catholic community. in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, that reaches out in faith to each other and to the broader community. The process, entitled the 'Imagine Project' involved a participatory parish process that included:

  • community research and consultation
  • an appreciative inquiry process among parishioners
  • a visioning and strategic planning process with all three parishes
  • community building at many levels
  • consultation with clergy and religious working in the community; and
  • consultation with the Diocese.

This process was documented in a Strategic Plan, key elements of which are described in this section. The plan is a work in progress; as we build community, the expression of our vision changes and grows. We invite you to learn more about the Imagine Project and to join us in working together and with our neighbours to contribute to the development of a healthy, caring community.

Poverty and homelessness in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) are higher than anywhere else in Canada, with many people affected by addictions and chronic health issues. Yet, a real sense of community is evident throughout the neighbourhoods.

The DTES Catholic parishes: Sacred Heart and St Paul’s, along with Kateri Tekakwitha Native Catholic Centre, endeavour to become active partners in community building. We aim to ensure inclusion of those most vulnerable.

‘All it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing’

Our Catholic Social Teaching calls us to:

“… unite (our) efforts with those of all men and women of good will, with the followers of other religions and with non-believers, so that this world of ours may effectively correspond to the divine plan: living as a family under the Creator’s watchful eye.” (57:136 Caritas in Veritate)

Our Vision The DTES Catholic parishes seek to build relationships based on mutuality and respect. Our Imagine Project aspires to an interdependent and healthy community dedicated to spiritual growth, inclusion, care and justice.

Downtown Eastside Parishes: A Good Neighbour Project

Our Mission The treasure of our Catholic Social Teaching compels us to develop relationships that inform and direct our efforts to benefit the common good.

The Imagine Project seeks to renovate our old elementary school to useable condition and to strengthen parish connections with the local community.

We trust that collaboration with partners will help us develop programs and partnerships that will serve to enrich the lives of individuals, families, children, youth and seniors in the area.

We cannot completely prevent suffering, but we can help to lift the burden. We invite you to join with us in Imagining our community, into a vibrant, healthy, inclusive place.

We hope you will consider joining us as we try to become good neighbours.
